Getting Cited by AI Answer Engines: A Publisher’s Checklist

Search is splitting in two. One half still sends clicks. The other answers the question on the spot and cites a handful of sources. If you are not in that handful, you are invisible in the fastest-growing slice of discovery.

Write in answers, not just articles

AI systems lift clean question-and-answer pairs. Headings phrased as real questions, with direct answers underneath, are far easier to quote than a meandering essay. Add FAQPage structured data and you hand the machine a labeled, citable block.

Be a recognizable entity

Models decide who you are from the sources they trust — Wikidata, Crunchbase, established profiles, reputable mentions. A brand with no entity footprint gets guessed at or skipped. A well-established cryptocurrencies news source that shows up consistently across the web is one the model can cite with confidence.

Make facts easy to verify

Dates, named authors, cited primary sources. AI systems prefer claims they can trace. The more verifiable your page, the safer it is to quote.

The checklist

Question-format headings. FAQ schema. Named, profiled authors. Entity presence in the knowledge graph. Consistent mentions on sites the model already trusts. Tick those and you stop hoping for citations and start earning them.
